What is Rewards for A Better Choice™?

Rewards for A Better Choice™ is an innovative earn-and-learn program sponsored by ABCs for Smarter Kids Inc (“ABCs”), a non-profit corporation formed to qualify under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and currently pursuing recognition of that status with the Internal Revenue Service. The mission of ABCs is to promote the values of healthy living, humane treatment of animals, fair trade, and sustainability of the environment through educational resources and financial assistance.

What type of financial assistance is available through the Rewards for A Better Choice™ program?

ABCs offers grants to eligible schools and non-profit child-related organizations through our Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program. This program enables parents, schools, and companies to work collaboratively together in support of ABCs’ mission by helping teach children about the positive impact they can make in the world. Through the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program, ABCs awards funds to qualified applicants based in part on their collection of eligible proofs of purchase of qualified products that support the values of environmental sustainability, fair trade and humane treatment of animals based on third party certifications.

What are the requirements for applying for a grant under the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program?

Grant applicants must be either a:

  • Public school in the United States,
  • Private or parochial school in the United States that qualifies as a Section 501(c)(3) educational organization,
  • School operated by, or on behalf of, the U.S. military worldwide,
  • Accredited private or parochial school in Puerto Rico, or
  • Qualified Section 501(c)(3) educational organization under the Internal Revenue Code whose programs support the values of healthy living, humane treatment of animals, fair trade and sustainability of the environment, which may include:
    • Home school associations containing a class of 15 or more students, o Parent-teacher associations or parent-teacher organizations,
    • Pre-school organizations, or
    • Boys’ and girls’ clubs.

Grant applicants must designate a coordinator to serve as the primary contact for their organization. The coordinator will be responsible for completing the grant application process and will oversee distribution of educational materials from ABCs to their respective teachers, leaders, parents and children.

What is the timing for grants under the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program?

Grant applications must be postmarked by March 1st and November 1st of each year, commencing on November 1, 2014. Grant recipients will be notified of their award by April 30th and December 30th of each year, commencing on December 30, 2014.

How are grants awarded under the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program?

Grant awards will be based in part on the applicant’s collection of eligible proofs of purchase of qualified products that support the values of environmental sustainability, fair trade and humane treatment of animals based on third party certifications. A list of qualified products will be listed on www.abcs4sk.org and provided to ABCs Coordinators. Grants will be awarded by April 30th and December 30th of each year, commencing on December 30, 2014. Payments will be made to each grant recipient by either check or electronic payment as selected by the grant applicant. Grant recipients who wish to receive payment by check should allow 2 to 4 weeks for checks to arrive.

How can grant recipients use funds awarded from the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program?

Grant recipients shall use funds from ABCs to support their educational purposes which may include promoting the values of environmental sustainability, fair trade and humane treatment of animals. ABCs may require periodic and/or final reports on the use of grant funds for awards exceeding $1,000.

What represents an eligible proof of purchase for the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program?

Eligible proofs of purchase are represented by the Universal Product Codes (or “UPC” barcode) as found on qualified products. All of the numbers of the UPC must be fully legible for product identification. Proofs of purchase clipped from packaging that is not part of the final sale of all components of such product to the end purchaser will not be accepted by ABCs.

What products are qualified for the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program?

Qualified products for the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program must be certified by at least one independent third party certification organization, as approved by ABCs, that such product is supportive of fair trade, humane treatment of animals, or sustainability of the environment. Currently, approved third party certification organizations include 1% for the Planet, Certified Humane, EcoCert, Fair for Life, Fair Trade Federation, Fair Trade USA, Fairtrade Foundation, Forest Stewardship Council, Green America, Leaping Bunny, Non-GMO Project, Rainforest Alliance, and USDA Organic.

In addition, qualified products must be manufactured by a product company that has entered into an agreement with ABCs to participate in the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program. A list of qualified products will be listed on www.abcs4sk.org.

What is the timing for the Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program?

The Rewards for A Better Choice™ grant program is expected to officially launch for the 2014-2015 academic year. ABCs is currently in the process of identifying and communicating with qualified schools, non-profit educational organizations, and product companies who may be included in the program. It is anticipated that a list of qualified products will be available on www.abcs4sk.org and provided to ABCs Coordinators before August 15, 2014. Updates will be sent to ABCs Coordinators and parents who have signed up for the program.

What type of educational materials will be available to participants in the Rewards for A Better Choice™ program?

ABCs is currently in the process of developing educational materials that will be available for free to qualified schools, non-profit child-related organizations, and parents who have enrolled for the Rewards for A Better Choice™ program. These materials can be used for in-class curriculum, special school activities, after-school programs, or at-home teaching. Age-appropriate materials will focus on the various aspects of healthy living, fair trade, humane treatment of animals, and sustainability of the environment with the objective of teaching children about the positive impact they can make in the world.

What information is shared with participating companies?

Upon receipt of grant applications and the counting of collected proofs of purchase, ABCs will send a report to each participating company indicating the number of collected proofs of purchase for their respective products from grant applicants. No additional information about any grant applicant or any of its members is shared with the participating companies.
